Staying Tuned

Some quick bits I liked seeing in my inbox this past week

* The Brand New Heavies - my initial entry into the neo-soulfunk movement have been hitting the road hard to support Get Used To It.  After a ten year sit on the bench the Heavies with R&B roots vocalist N'Dea Davenport back on the team have been blasting around the world, but are coming by again with Macy Gray.  The Heavies have never sounded so good.  Catch 'em.

* Rogue Wave's new album Asleep At Heaven's Gate will be out soon ( September 18th) Leaving Sub-Pop where they released one of my five albums you need to own in 2005 to prove that you know anything about music instead of being a big fat poser with an Itunes addiction, Descended Like Vultures and now on the eco-friendly and perfectly suited Brush Fire Records, Rogue Wave are Ben Folds, Nick Drake, Elvis Costello smart, with the emotional weight of Will Oldham and . Their music can create aching mood swings with a switch (if you don't believe me listen to "Salesman On the Day of the Parade" ) and I still can't get the chorus of "California" out of my frontal lobe everytime I wanna pull a nutty while stuck in LA traffic. The other good news is Asleep At Heaven's Gate, their third studio album was produced by Roger Moutenot (Yo La Tengo, Sleater Kinney, Elvis Costello) and Zach Rogue with guest appearances by Matthew Caws from Nada Surf and John Vanderslice.

* Joseph Arthur opens MOMAR (The Museum of Modern Arthur)

Sweet Talk's favorite music correspondent and Letters to the Editor fan,  Musician, artist and poet Joseph Arthur recently opened MOMAR (The Museum Of Modern Arthur) in Brooklyn: MOMAR is  a gallery showcasing work from a variety of artists, including his own, which earned his 1999 EP Vacancy a Grammy nomination for its packaging. The New York-based renaissance man recently put out Let's Just Be, his second release on his own label, Lonely Astronaut, and his first featuring the eponymous backing band, the Lonely Astronauts.   Looking forward to the first special super cool guy invite for yours truly to prowl the grounds with a vat of Brain Freezes.

* The Best Single Take Contraption Video Since the Famous Honda Accord take I'm a sucker for these types of painstaking patient endeavors of engineering. Like those massive domino set-ups, these feats of wonkish determination boggle my ADD mind. I particularly like this one because of it's dorm room -I should be studying for exams but instead I thought this would be more fun - vibe....
